Begin the naturalization process today and be on your way to becoming a citizen of the United States. Call Treviño Law Office, LLC now at (785) 328-4401 to get started.
A lawful permanent resident of the United States has certain important immigration benefits, such as employment authorization, eligibility for certain government assistance programs, and eligibility to petition for certain family members to become lawful permanent residents.
However, lawful permanent residents are subject to removal for committing certain offenses and may be rendered inadmissible if they are out of the country and seek re-entry into the United States. Lawful permanent residents may also jeopardize their residency if they remain outside the United States for a prolonged period of time, generally six months or more.
Perhaps more importantly, lawful permanent residents cannot vote in U.S. elections. By naturalizing from a lawful permanent resident to a United States citizen, a person may pursue unlimited international travel, will not be subject to inadmissibility laws, and may register to vote.
As a lawful permanent resident of the United States, you may be eligible to naturalize and become a U.S. citizen. If you have obtained your residency by way of marriage, you can file for naturalization three years after your date of residency. If you've obtained your residency by other means, you must wait five years after your date of residency to file for naturalization.
Before your application can be approved, you will be required to take an English proficiency test and demonstrate basic knowledge about U.S. history and government. This happens during an interview with a USCIS officer.
Study materials are provided by USCIS, and in special circumstances, applicants may qualify for exemptions to the testing requirement. Study materials for the English language proficiency test and the naturalization self-test are also available.
